New tenants for island

Posted: 18 November 2006

GATEWAY Village is one step further to becoming the Border’s tourism, cultural and culinary hub with two new tenants set to open their doors.

Wodonga council’s director of investment attraction, Michael Gobel, said the business injection was the result of a marketing campaign which sought to attract “the right sort of tenant”.

“There are two more sites to fill and we’re talking to interested parties now — it’s important to get the right sort of tenant for the precinct,” he said.

Council’s economic development officer, Matt Taylor, said the slab hut would be occupied by Musikids which would open for business from January 1, supported by a five-year lease.

The other tenant is Murray River Canoe Hire, which has an eight-year lease and will start operating at the site from December 1.

Wodonga councillor Brian Wicks said he believed Gateway Island was one of the biggest development opportunities on the Border.

“We would really like to see the whole of Gateway Island developed into a tourism and residential precinct, making use of our waterways and our biggest asset, the Murray River,” he said.
