Cable bridge work starts

Posted: 18 November 2006

THE speed of the Albury-Wodonga Hume Freeway project will see Albury’s $4 million cable-stay foot bridge taking shape by Christmas.

Some horizontal girders will be laid this weekend for the bridge, which will be built over the freeway and railway at the end of Dean St.

Within weeks Abigroup will erect two 42m-high steel poles from which steel cables will hang.

They should be up at or just after Christmas and promise to be a landmark for Albury for the next century.

They will support a 134m footbridge linking East Albury to Dean St.

It will be 4m wide and will complement foot bridges opposite Amatex and Kenilworth streets.

The Dean St bridge has a design similar to Sydney’s Anzac Bridge near Darling Harbour, but is much smaller.

The bridge will be a visual reflection of the Albury War Memorial that dominates the western end of Dean St.

The three pedestrian bridges are important parts of the $524 million project, now expected to open in March.

Meanwhile, Fitzgerald Contractors has virtually completed the second box-girder bridge over the Murray River.

The bridges, costing $15 million include a main river span of 50m with the entire structure about 200m long.

Most of the concrete pavement has been laid for the freeway and Bandiana link.

Almost all the pavement between Thurgoona Drive and Billy Hughes Bridge is finished.

The Fallon St bridge should open in the new year.

A roundabout on Borella Rd at Schubach St is open and should be completed by Christmas.
