Tank shores up water supply

NORTH East Water will build a six-megalitre storage tank to boost supply and water pressure for West Wodonga residents.

The tank will be constructed on McGaffins Hill at a cost of $1.1 million.

Work has started and is expected to be completed by mid-January.

A North East Water spokesman said the tank was the next phase in the authority’s master plan to secure water supplies in the city.

The spokesman said the tank would supplement the existing Bears Hill storage which services homes in and around the “high level zone” of Felltimber Creek Rd, Parkers Rd, Yarralumla Drive and Huon Creek Rd.

Project engineer Lucas Krutop said the tank would provide supply security and constant pressure.

“This new development has been specifically designed to help ensure our supply system provides equally for all corners of Wodonga,” Mr Krutop said.

“It is one of a number of steps that will take place over the next decade or so that aim to cater for the expected growth of the city.”

Construction of the tank followed the recent completion of a second 14-megalitre storage at Huon Hill, which doubled the plant’s storage capacity.

The McGaffin’s Hill Tank would be located on land south of Felltimber Creek Rd and would be 8m high and 32m across.

Other projects planned for Wodonga under the authority’s 2004 master plan include:

An upgrade of the Huon Hill water treatment plant in 2008;

A six-megalitre tank at Baranduda in 2009;

An additional pump at Wodonga raw water pump station in 2009;

The addition of an eighth filter cell at the plant in 2010;

Installation of a large supply main to the high level zone in 2010; and,

Trunk mains to serve “Army land’ development.
